CHUANG X YI: THE MODULAR LILONG

CHUANG X YI: THE MODULAR LILONG

Chuang x Yi: The Modular Lilong
Chuang x Yi : The ‘Modular Lilong’ was designed for Value Retail China to showcase ‘Chuang x Yi’; a concept brand that provides a platform for Chinese fashion designers. The 150 sqm site is located in Yioulai Shanghai Village; a sister to Bicester Village in London – both global shopping developments. The intent of ‘Chuang x Yi’ is to create a retail experience specifically related to the context of Shanghai.
Chuang x Yi: The Modular Lilong
Chuang x Yi: The Modular Lilong
The term lilong refers to an urban typology, organized around meandering lanes, which often display creative solutions in response to issues of space shortage. The resulting blur between private and public, residential and commercial gives Shanghai its signature streetscape. Following the design brief to create a backdrop showcasing selective contemporary Chinese designers, Lukstudio re-interpreted the local, urban fabric with 3 ‘lanehouses’ arranged into different display areas; one waiting lounge, two dressing rooms, the main cashier counter and a service area.
Chuang x Yi: The Modular Lilong
Chuang x Yi: The Modular Lilong
The structure of these lanehouses is conceived as a modular kit of parts, so that it can easily be disassembled and re-installed in another shop location if needed. The pieces are based on architectural features and textures found in a lilong. For example, old stone gates known as, ‘shikumen’ are used as entrance ways, with their typical round corners seen in the smooth outline of the display cases. Furthermore, hanging washing lines are turned into copper-coated racks to display clothes, while bamboo rattan; a texture used in vernacular furniture, is applied to the divider screens. Display plinths and racks are positioned along the lane reminiscent of the common scene of scattering benches and stools.

Despite the clear boundary between the stone pavement and the wooden flooring, the open display allows a fluid visual dialogue between the urban lane and the elegantly stacked houses. The retail experience consists of many architectural layers combined into a cohesive structure; offering a sense of pliancy and order that reflects the adaptive nature of lilong life. In this way Lukstudio has generated a  journey of discovery, connecting old Shanghai architecture with today’s design world

To avoid the solemn impression of a traditional office, the design team aims to make full use of the space as well as create a variety of gray areas. The minimalism monochrome style is not only under the economical consideration, but also fits the modern and high-tech esthetic of an IT company. The design team also adds wooden bay windows that incorporates a stroke of natural warm color, providing a relaxing reading and communication environment for staff. Glass walls maximize the transparency of the whole space, making every part has easy visual access to another and the identity of each room blurred to expand vision in the office.

The design team also did the VI design for the client, including the LOGO wall, decorations on the glass walls and so on. Visitors can be taken into the meeting room from the left side, while the staffs can enter from another door.

The glass walls make the office a transparent space and make every part link together, which reduces the sense of narrowness. The well-arranged black-and-white patterns create the sense of ample space, and the application of glass walls meets the light requirement as well as reduces the sense of narrowness from limited room.

The neat and clean tea room offers the staff a relaxing atmosphere. The wooden bay windows add a warm tone to the whole black-and white space. The comfortable bay windows offer a reading and communication area, the staff can watch the scenes outside, read books and drink tea here. It is definitely a highlighted design to add a relaxing atmosphere in this men’s office. The cacti named “Kylin” represent the enterprise spirit of self-improvement and advance with the times. The designers are willing to handle the overall design for a project, thus they did not only interior design, but also industrial design and graphic design, such as the LOGO, notebooks, rulers , business cards, badges and so on, which are useful to the client in the future.

In contrast the Cocktail Bar, with a dark palette of Italian Terrazzo and dramatic curved glass, is dedicated to the creative science of cocktails. Led by Grant Sceney, the hotel’s creative beverage director, and David Wolowidnyk, Botanist head bartender, the international award-winning duo created a list of whimsical yet sophisticated cocktails. The elevated beverage experience is enhanced by the Cocktail Lab with commercial kitchen elements such as a centrifuge, band saw, and roto-vaporizer.  Select libations give a nod to its chemistry inspired roots and botanical background. The Deep Cove for example uses Island Gin, sea buckthorn, and blue algae and is served in a bespoke glass molded onto a log of driftwood.

The sensory experience culminates in the Dining Room, a place intended to be active and engaging morning to night. A mixture of various limestone, whitewashed woods and ornate metalwork sets its foundation with pops of plant material found throughout. The layout invites guests to engage with one another, best illustrated by a series of tables that connect via a flowing ‘S’ curve banquette. PIERRE-PERRET SCHOOL’S EXTERIOR IN FRANCE IS DESIGNED LIKE AN UFO

PIERRE-PERRET SCHOOL’S EXTERIOR IN FRANCE IS DESIGNED LIKE AN UFO

Ameller, Dubois & Associés  : The early childhood school complex designed by Philippe Ameller and Jacques Dubois in the suburban town of Serris, east of Paris, does not seem to be particularly alien or extravagant. But the urban context makes the new building a real UFO, as the Pierre-Perret school is located near Disneyland Paris.

Since its inauguration in 1992, the notorious amusement park has been a true engine of economic development. But it also provides its peculiar aesthetic direction, somewhere between The Truman Show and an impersonation of Parisian late XIXth century style. In this artificial area, the architects challenged the local mainstream tastes with their new school.

“We did think of this school project as an opportunity – and almost a duty – to place there a hint, a clue about what a pleasant life may be away from the Disneyland influences. A humble piece of genuine architecture of the early XXIst century seemed to be what the inhabitants of Serris needed most, for their youngest children to grow aware of their time.”

Fortunately, a recent awards jury shared this point of view, and liked the wooden touch of the design (totally alien to Serris until then). “No one felt insulted”, says Jacques Dubois, “as we certainly did not make fun of the existing town. We just felt it deserved to switch to something a little more genuine, step by step. This is the first step, and the population seems to appreciate it.”

INSPIRATION IS EVERYWHERE – BESPOKE IS ROLLS ROYCE LIMELIGHT COLLECTION INTERIORS….

Title - Rolls Royce Phantom Limelight Collection Front

British engineering ingenuity and artistic creativity have proven to be the inspiration behind the naming and creation of the latest Bespoke Phantom Collection to emerge from the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England.

Rolls Royce Phantom Limelight Collection Treadplate Rolls Royce Phantom Limelight Collection IP Clock

The Rolls-Royce Phantom Limelight Collection has been conceived for that select group of people who spend their lives in the public eye and on the world stage. Its name was inspired by the origin of a British invention which became synonymous with fame. The limelight effect was originally discovered in the 1820s by Sir Goldsworthy Gurney, a prototypical British gentleman scientist and inventor of the Victorian era. It was harnessed to revolutionize illumination in the theatres of London’s Covent Garden, highlighting leading actors on the stage, thus leading to the phrase, ‘in the limelight’.

“In creating the Rolls-Royce Phantom Limelight Collection, our designers have delivered authentic luxury by thinking deeply about the lifestyles of the powerful people who operate in the public eye and move swiftly from engagement to engagement as part of their daily life,” explains Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “The result is a beautiful, discreet motor car in which those for whom the world is waiting can prepare, relax and arrive in the finest luxury and style.”

In common with its sister Phantom Serenity, which was unveiled to the world at last month’s Geneva Salon, Limelight proves once again why Phantom is considered ‘the Best Car in the World’. The Bespoke designers at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood have used their deep understanding of the habits and behaviours of those powerful people, who make and influence world-changing decisions every day, to create a collection of 25 super-luxury motor cars that cater directly to their busy lives like no other car maker can.

Limelight’s wholly new approach to luxury once again sets the benchmark by delighting the most demanding and exacting people in the world – Rolls-Royce customers. Once again Bespoke IS Rolls-Royce.

Prepare, Relax, Arrive

Thinking about the lifestyles of many of their clients, who spend considerable amounts of time travelling in the rear compartment of their Phantoms, the Bespoke design team at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars knew they could, in the words of Sir Henry Royce, “take the best that exists and make it better”.

Whilst mass-luxury car manufacturers simply offer a means of conspicuously getting from A to B in some luxury, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars seeks to understand and exceed the demands of super-luxury customers who are always on the move, preparing to arrive for their next big life moment.

With this in mind they have created the “Phantom Suite” comprising unique personalized rear door panniers to ensure cherished personal possessions fall easily to hand for preparing for the next engagement, and a new luxury seating configuration in which to relax in before arriving.

Phantom Limelight has thus been conceived as the ultimate travelling companion as its owner moves from major event to momentous occasion, helping them to Prepare, Relax and Arrive for their moment in the limelight in consummate Rolls-Royce luxury.

Authentic Luxury on the Move

Authentic luxury is only achieved through ultimately understanding the needs and desires of the most discerning patrons in the world – Rolls-Royce customers. From their deep understanding of this specific group of super-luxury clients, the Bespoke design team behind Limelight understood that a number of very human emotions and needs mattered: easy access to one’s favorite, personal possessions in order to prepare for the coming engagement; the opportunity to relax in ultimate luxury once ready and an impactful arrival. For these select people, Phantom Limelight is their very personal concept of authentic luxury.

Prepare

A unique personalized rear door pannier has been designed to ensure cherished personal possessions fall easily to hand. Ladies’ and Gentleman’s panniers are offered to the customer who can personalise their Phantom Limelight with door panniers that best suit their gender preferences. The Ladies’ and the Gentleman’s panniers can also be personalized to suit what particular personal possessions are required for the occasion.

In the standard configuration, the Concealed Fragrance Holder for three individual fragrances is located in the top left pocket of the Ladies’ pannier whilst in the Gentlemen’s pannier the concealed section holds watches. The concealed panel opens at an effortless push of the hand.

The top right pocket, which is open, contains the fragrance bottles in the Gentlemen’s pannier whilst in the Ladies’ are two watch or jewelry holders.

The fragrance bottles, which ensure the passenger always has the right fragrance available to them whatever the time of day, are handmade in the famous Bresle Valley in North West France – home to 75% of the world’s luxury bottles for perfumes and spirits.

The bottom left pocket houses a universal vanity pouch made of the finest materials, with space for credit cards, business cards, spectacle storage or makeup, whilst Ladies’ and Gentleman’s Accessory Z-Boxes, constructed from carbon fibre, milled in aluminium and hand covered in the finest leathers, complete the door pannier.

Once the passengers have prepared for their engagement by choosing their preferred accessories, they sit back and relax in the new Rolls-Royce seat until they reach their destination.

Relax

The optimum position for relaxing in luxury and safety in the rear compartment of a motor car whilst on the move has long been a subject of debate. Whilst some mass-luxury car makers have gone so far in their wish to install an aircraft-style flat-bed seat in the rear that they have had to created safety devices to compensate for the resulting body posture, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars engineers and ergonomists have worked closely with the medical profession to establish the optimum seat position that relaxes the body most whilst in motion. The result is the new rear seat to feature first in Phantom Limelight.

The Phantom Limelight seat back reclines the body by a recommended 27° helping to rest the head on the headrest cushion. Lower down the body, a new calf rest raises electrically by 68° to support the calf, whilst a foot rest emerges out of the floor to raise the feet up to 30°, all contributing to the perfect relaxed posture in motion.

Also contributing to the passenger’s relaxation is the choice of two compartment trims as well as several new Bespoke features.

The Light contrast scheme features Seashell with Navy Blue Contrast Leather and Seashell tone-on-tone stitching, whilst the Dark contrast scheme offers Navy Blue with Seashell Contrast Leather and Navy tone-on-tone stitching.

Complex embroidery inspired by a diamond shape, in homage to the legacy of great Rolls-Royce motor cars of the past, has been applied to the central seat flutes, door cards, rear console and for the first time to the Picnic Table backs.

Unique to this Collection and a first for Phantom, is a two-veneer finish that shows off the unique skills of the woodworkers at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. Piano Seashell specific to this collection is applied to the door cappings, blending the veneer with the leather schemes. Smoked Chestnut completes the colour scheme, the first time that this veneer has been used in Phantom.

A specially created Limelight Bespoke Clock draws influence from the rich Gala Blue paint exterior and the diamond motif design that runs throughout the collection.

Arrive

Prepared and relaxed, our passengers arrive for their next engagement clad in the rich but stealthy Gala Blue of Phantom Limelight. Rolling to a halt on its unique nine-spoke alloy wheels, the beautiful motor car features a Seashell and Navy Blue hand-painted coachline with a diamond motif, creating a three dimensional illusion of a diamond bracelet draped over the surface of the car.

This luxury is truly Unparalleled …We are sure. The Interior Directory
