Clerkenwell Design Week : Clerkenwell is home to scores of world class design showrooms, and Clerkenwell Design Week 2016 (CDW) will see top brands open their doors for the design savvy and design curious to explore their latest offerings. Whether you are seeking inspiration or in need of a specific product, the wealth of showrooms in Clerkenwell offers something for everyone; no other part of London has as many showrooms of international design relevance. These showrooms form the bedrock of Clerkenwell, and throughout CDW the spaces offer a window into the best in contemporary manufacturing and design, showcasing the latest products and concepts, for contract, architecture and interior design. As an orientation point for visitors, Brewhouse Yard will be temporarily transformed for the festival, to act as a gateway to Clerkenwell’s showrooms. Working with local partners, both of the Yard’s resident architecture practices Studio Egret West and BDP will transform large parts of the public domain to celebrate CDW with a dedicated café, information point, pop-up workspace for visitors, and programme of events.
Creative interventions are taking place this year, with collaborations and commissions made especially for CDW, adding to the unique festival atmosphere. These include ‘One Thing After Another’, a project that explores the inputs and outputs of information, between digital and physical worlds, created by Sam Jacob for the Sto Werkstatt Gallery space. Taking the form of an exploded shed, and using 3D scanning and digital fabrication techniques, the project is designed to stimulate discussion, and a series of talks at the installation promise to be engaging. The ‘Sensorium’, created by HASSELL, and HÅG will be an immersive journey through an urban pleasure garden, hosted in their showroom. Extensively researched, the experience draws on the colourful history of 18th Century Clerkenwell, contrasting the absurd and the real. For a more culinary experience, kitchen experts 2 bulthaup Clerkenwell will collaborate with Modern Pantry founder Anna Hansen. They will present signature dishes, making their showroom a must for the foodie design fan.
There are also several newcomers to CDW. Furniture makers Allermuir will show a number of new collections including soft-seating ‘Famiglia’ by PearsonLloyd in their new space. European office experts EOL will celebrate the opening of their contemporary, bright, spacious showroom with new products, plus leading German Office Electrics supplier Bachmann will run a series of workshops. British designed modular furniture Isomi, by Paul Crofts, also opens its doors to CDW for the first time. New showroom BD Design will bring the works of Salvador Dali to life with its handcrafted pieces from Barcelona, launching the new Dali chair in Clerkenwell.
For hands-on craftsmanship, designer Helen Yardley will be demonstrating how her timeless rugs are made at Craft Central, as well as showcasing new collections. Tom Dixon is launching his first ever contract carpet collection at CDW in collaboration with ege carpets. The collection is set to be visually stunning; titled ‘Industrial Landscape’; expect familiar London motifs to be transformed into beguiling patterns. The full collection is presented by ege together with Camira Fabrics in their joint showroom on Britton Street.
DOMUS will launch Rombini, a new porcelain tile collection from global-leading Italian manufacturer Mutina. Exclusive to DOMUS in the UK, Rombini has been created by French design brothers, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec and is their second collection for Mutina, following Pico which was launched in 2012. Swedish flooring experts BOLON will open up the London showroom Flooring Concepts, to show their new BOLON By You collection, and collaboration with London-based designers Doshi Levien. From an altruistic perspective to make design more inclusive, DesigningFutures@CDW will launch its new programme that aims to giveyoungsters access to the design world. Through practical work experience in showrooms during CDW, Designing Futures helps opens new doors to what can sometimes be a closed sector. Milliken flooring experts is just one of the participating showrooms.
Bathroom pioneers TOTO will celebrate their success since 1980 of the ‘washlets’, as well as bring their latest high technology bathroom products from Japan, while West One Bathrooms will showcase new collections from Kohler.
Pioneers of office and contract furniture Vitra will focus on textiles and colour with an installation by Hella Jongerious, as well as showing new pieces from Barber&Osgerby. Herman Miller, the US office expert has selected Clerkenwell as the place to reveal its new chair, hotly anticipated and tipped to bridge the gap between home and office. A series of ‘insight seminars’ will support the launch. Meanwhile North London designers of iconic furniture, Hitch Mylius, will return to CDW to launch a new square sofa at its permanent showroom at Malmaison and will be working with the luxury hotel’s mixologists to create a cocktail especially for the festival.
Bene will demonstrate their belief in inspiring workplaces through their ‘Nice Wall’, made with graphic facilitators Scriberia, which will document CDW in a digital tapestry. Exploring the new dynamics of workplace design and technology, Humanscale has a packed programme of talks and new launches, focused on innovations and coworking, all curated by brothers Mustafa & Erhan Afsaroglu from HLW and UMO Architecture. Visitors to CDW will also see their bright ‘Ballo’ stools and lighting dotted around key information points.
Orangebox have created a ‘living lab’ in their new purpose-built home in Northampton Road to demonstrate the reality of their SmartworkingTM philosophy. Visitors can explore the five floor space dedicated to collaborative workplace for the first time during CDW. Workplace furniture experts naughtone will also showcase their new collection of 100% UK made pieces, as well as inviting CDW visitors to their pop-up gin bar. This year we are proud to welcome new showrooms to CDW, as well as see established figures in the 5 community. There is a real push from the showrooms for creative collaborations, engaging talks and workshops, and some fantastic new products debuted at Clerkenwell. This year is set to be the strongest yet.”
